Saved By The Bell

Saved By The Bell - August 1989 to May 1993

The series is a retooled version of the 1988 series Good Morning, Miss Bliss, which later retconned into the history of Saved by the Bell. The series follows the exploits of several students at Bayside High School, along with their principal. The show stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Dustin Diamond, Lark Voorhies and Dennis Haskins, who appeared in Good Morning, Miss Bliss, as well as Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, Elizabeth Berkley and Mario Lopez, who joined the cast for Saved by the Bell. The show brought fame to the cast members and launched most of their careers.

The fact that the show often incorporated dramatic elements into episodes by dealing with "real teen social issues", such as drug use, drinking and driving, homelessness, financial issues, divorce, first love and love lost, graduating, college, sibling rivalry, taking responsibilities for one's actions, being bullied, death, and environmental issues made it a precursor (with other teen sitcoms of the time like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) for networks of more recent shows such as The O.C. and Dawson's Creek to introduce young target audiences to critical moral matters. Notably, sexual relationships were alluded to but not actually dealt with. (See also Very special episode.)

The show's popularity allowed for two spin-off series: Saved by the Bell: The College Years, which follows several of the original characters' college experiences, and Saved by the Bell: The New Class, which follows a new group of students at Bayside High School. The series also spawned two TV movies and a short-lived comic book series.

Round The Twist

Round the Twist - April 4, 1989 – May 2, 2001

Round the Twist is a Logie Award-winning Australian children's television series about three children and their widowed father who live in a lighthouse and become involved in many magical adventures.

Only four series were made despite the show having an eleven year run. The first two series were based on fantasy stories written by author Paul Jennings; the latter two were based on a variety of authors' work. Its first series was made in 1989. A second series, with many roles re-cast, was made in 1992. A third series, again re-cast, was made in 1999, followed by a fourth (with some roles again re-cast) in 2000.

The show's distinctive theme song, with the lyrics "have you ever... ever felt like this?..." was sung by Tamsin West, who played the lead female role of Linda in the first series. It borrowed lines from popular nursery rhymes such as "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly", "Humpty Dumpty" and "Rain Rain Go Away".

Many external scenes were shot around the region of the Split Point Lighthouse in Aireys Inlet, Victoria, Australia.

Mike & Angelo

Mike & Angelo - March 1989 to March 2000

Mike and Angelo is one of Britain's longest running kids' sitcom/dramas, producing over 130 episodes in its run, and a classic of the 90's. The adventures of Angelo the Inventor Alien and Mike the American Kid have been enjoyed by so many British children since 1989.

Michael King is a level-headed American youth inhabiting England with his mum Rita. Rita has been a writer in America. They buy number 8 Larskwood Lane, Crickelwood, an old house. However, life is changed by the arrival of Angelo, a humanoid creature from another dimension in a desperate hurry to escape his planet about to self-destruct.

Angelo has good intentions, but wild ideas, and the ability to make a lot of surreal things happen such as bringing back Cleopatra, turning their house into a Victorian household and flying sheds above the town. Angelo also a bit of an inventor, decides to invent strange and surreal things like hopper boots and steam powered moustache strimmers! Over the years people have gone and came and in 1994, Katy Anderson, from Glasgow took over as Mike's permanent career. Along with Angelo!

Poirot

Poirot - January 1989 to November 2013

Welcome to the Poirot guide at TV.com. This is a British series which brings to life Agatha Christie's Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot (played by David Suchet), whose sleuthing, for the purposes of this series, belongs chiefly in the 1930s. Based in London, with the very English Captain Hastings (Hugh Fraser) as his Dr Watson, Poirot's field of operations ranges around the world.

The series has strong story lines, good production and acting, and a real period flavour. Poirot won two BAFTA awards in 1990, then had more BAFTA nominations as Best Drama Series in 1991 and 1992.

Nearly sixty of Agatha Christie's seventy-two Poirot stories have been produced in this series, so there are a more still to look forward to. David Suchet has said he hopes to film them all.

Count Duckula

Count Duckula - September 1988 to February 1993

Count Duckula is a British children's animated comedy-drama horror television series created by British studio Cosgrove Hall as a spin-off from Danger Mouse, a series in which the Count Duckula character was a recurring villain. Count Duckula premiered for three series from 6 September 1988 to 16 February 1993, and was produced by Thames Television for 58 episodes and Central Televisionfor the final seven episodes. In all, 65 episodes were made, each about 22 minutes long. All 65 episodes have been released on DVD in the U.K., while only the first series has been released in North America.

The show is a loose parody of the story of Count Dracula. Set in Transylvania (a region in Romania), Duckula lives in a spooky castle known as Castle Duckula alongside his butler Igor and his large nanny (who is always referred to as "Nanny" and perpetually wears an arm sling). Almost all of the characters in the show are anthropomorphised birds.

Garfield and Friends

Garfield and Friends - September 1988 to December 1994

Based on the highly popular comic strip by Jim Davis, Garfield and Friends was considered the best long-running cartoon on CBS. This Saturday morning series featured the adventures of that lovable, hungry fat cat Garfield, his yellow dog friend Odie, and their cartoonist bachelor master Jon Arbuckle.

Garfield cartoons shared the spot with a new cartoon series created for this series called U.S. Acres (also based on a comic strip by Jim Davis). U.S. Acres was a cartoon about a group of barnyard animals who run a farm. The leader was Orson Pig, the bookish and perceptive pig. His friends had many different qualities: Wade Duck was the scaredy-cat duck who runs away from everything, no kidding; Booker was a crafty little chick whose main goal was to chase a worm, and his brother Sheldon was nothing more than an egg with two legs sticking out; Roy Rooster was the practical joking rooster who puts everyone in trouble with his jokes; and two sheep, Bo and Lanolin, were always bickering with each other about nearly everything. Bo being a nice guy and Lanolin a cruel girl. Each episode, they had to protect the farm from Orson's big bad brothers and a crafty weasel. Before this series, Garfield cartoons were shown as yearly specials on CBS, and the specials were so great that CBS decided to turn Garfield into a cartoon series. In the first season, each 30-minute episode was packed with three 8-minute shorts, two Garfield shorts and one U.S. Acres short.

Red Dwarf

Red Dwarf - 1988 till 2012

Red Dwarf is a British comedy franchise which primarily comprises ten series (including a ninth mini-series named Back To Earth) of a television science fiction sitcom that aired on BBC Two between 1988 and 1993 and from 1997 to 1999, and on Dave in 2009 and 2012, gaining a cult following. The series was created by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor. In addition to the television episodes, there are four novels, two pilot episodes for an American version of the show, a radio version produced for BBC Radio 7, tie-in books, magazines and other merchandise.

Despite the pastiche of science fiction used as a backdrop, Red Dwarf is primarily a character-driven comedy, with off-the-wall, often scatological science fiction elements used as complementary plot devices. In the early episodes, a recurring source of comedy was the "Odd Couple"-style relationship between the two central characters of the show, who have an intense dislike for each other and are trapped together deep in space. The main characters are Dave Lister, the last known human alive, and Arnold Rimmer, a hologram of Lister's dead bunkmate. The other regular characters are Cat, a lifeform which evolved from the descendants of Lister's pregnant pet cat Frankenstein; Holly, Red Dwarf's computer; Kryten, a service mechanoid; and, as of Series VII to Back to Earth, Kristine Kochanski, an alternative-reality version of Lister's long-lost love.
